Michael Schumacher drove faultlessly to secure his 90th Grand Prix victory from Kimi Raikkonen and BMW's Robert Kubica. The big news however, was that Fernando Alonso's engine failure has allowed Schumacher to close to within two points of the championship lead, with three races remaining. Schumacher also confirmed he is to retire at the end of this season.

It was a beautiful late summer's day at Monza, but matters were far more ugly in the paddock and on the grid where the majority seemed stunned and mystified at the penalty levied against Fernando Alonso for apparently blocking Felipe Massa at the end of qualifying. Alonso had been fuming in the morning when Renault invited the media to its motorhome to see the evidence, but down on the grid the Spaniard was calmer and looked determined to get even.

As the cars completed the parade lap, Raikkonen lined up in pole ahead of Schumacher, Heidfeld and Massa. Alonso should have been fifth, but instead had to pull into tenth place on the grid. The Spaniard didn't hang around though - by the second chicane he had already moved up to eighth, then dispatched de la Rosa for seventh on the entry to Ascari before slipstreaming Heidfeld down the pit straight and passing him under braking - however, Alonso was forced to cut the chicane.

At the front Raikkonen streamed off into the lead and Schumacher resisted an early challenge from Heidfeld to retain second. Robert Kubica made a storming getaway and was up to third by the end of the first lap.

As matters calmed down on lap four, Raikkonen was leading Schumacher, Kubica, Massa, Button, Alonso, Heidfeld and de la Rosa. And so the order remained until Raikkonen pitted on lap 15, releasing Schumacher into the lead. The Ferrari refuelled on the next lap and rejoined ahead of Raikkonen. Alonso also profited during the pit stops, passing Button. In the meantime Robert Kubica was leading and stayed out front until he pitted on lap 22.

The order stabilised and it emerged that Barrichello and Fisichella were both one-stopping and set to come into play in the closing stages. Raikkonen was the first of the two-stoppers to make his final visit to the pits on lap 38 - Schumacher pitted the following lap and rejoined comfortably ahead.

However, behind the leading duo, Alonso was right on the tail of Massa and Kubica and when the second Ferrari pitted on lap 39, Alonso put the hammer down, and immediately closed in on the BMW. Both pitted on lap 41 and lef the pit lane side by side with Alonso determined and passing the Pole down the run to the first corner.

Alonso succeeded and jumped up to third place after starting from tenth on the grid and just as it looked like an admirable damage limitation exercise, the Spaniard's Renault engine cruelly exploded just ten laps from the flag.

Michael Schumacher just had to cruise to the finish to seal his 90th Grand Prix victory and take ten points out of Alonso's championship lead - the Spaniard now has only two points over the German with three races remaining. Kimi Raikkonen seemed to settle for second while Robert Kubica's impressive drive earned him his first F1 podium.

Fisichella's one-stop strategy earned him fourth place ahead of the two Hondas of Button and Barrichello. Trulli and Heidfeld took the final two points-paying positions but the story was all about Alonso's rotten luck and Michael Schumacher's impending announcement on his future.
