Felipe Massa stormed to his maiden F1 victory from pole position in Turkey becoming the sport's second first-time winner in as many races. Fernando Alonso held off immense pressure from Michael Schumacher in the final stages of the race to lead the German home in second and third places respectively.
Conditions were very hot and sunny. Air temperature was a stifling 35 degrees Centigrade and the track a scorching 53 degrees. The heat got to Michael Schumacher as he made a sluggish start and Alonso pulled alongside. The German chopped across the track in a desperate attempt and courtesy of some incredibly late braking managed to fend his title rival off.
As Massa streamed off into the lead and Schumacher contained Alonso, Giancarlo Fisichella had a lazy spin in the first corner and unable to avoid the Renault, Heidfeld also lost his front wing. Behind them Kubica nailed Raikkonen down into the first corner and the Finn was hit behind by Scott Speed, puncturing his left-rear tyre.
Renault and BMW repaired the noses of their two drivers' cars while Kimi Raikkonen limped back to the McLaren garage. The team carved the destroyed tyre from the rear bodywork of his car, put on a new set of boots and sent him on his way only for Raikkonen to run wide in turn eight and stuff his car into the wall.
Massa established himself in the lead ahead of Schumacher, Alonso, Button, Webber and Kubica. Things looked stable until lap 14 when Liuzzi spun under pressure from Albers and stalled his car in the middle of turn one. The safety car was deployed to remove the car from a dangerous position and Massa, Schumacher and Alonso all filed into the pits. Schumacher had to sit and wait though for Ferrari to service his team mate and in the meantime Alonso cruised past into second place.
Massa set about rebuilding his lead and by lap 32 had an eight-second advantage over Alonso. Schumacher slipped away from Spaniard, not helped by running wide in the triple-apex turn eight on lap 29, and falling eight-seconds behind.
Alonso and Massa made their second pit stops almost simultaneously as Schumacher continued and carved the gap to Alonso down to just a few seconds. In the final fifteen laps of the race Schumacher closed to within half a second of Alonso and was pressuring the Spaniard all the way.
But he could not do enough and the reigning champion led the seven-time champion home and extended his lead to twelve points with four races remaining. But the day belonged to Felipe Massa who drove from pole position to claim his maiden F1 victory from 66 race starts.
Button finished fourth after winning his maiden Grand Prix in Hungary three weeks ago ahead of Pedro de la Rosa and Giancarlo Fisichella recovering to sixth. Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello claimed the remaining points with seventh and eighth.
